What is PEMF?
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. It describes a gentle form of energy in which a device sends short, repeated bursts of a magnetic field through the body, usually from a coil, mat or applicator. A static magnet produces a field that never changes. A pulsed field switches on and off, or rises and falls, many times every second. That change is what makes the field interesting to biology, because a changing magnetic field can induce very small electrical currents in conductive tissue, and the body is full of salty, water-rich fluids that conduct electricity well.
The idea is not new. Scientists have studied electromagnetic fields in living tissue for well over a century. In the late twentieth century, specific pulsed fields were developed for orthopaedic use, and certain PEMF devices have since been cleared by regulators, including the US Food and Drug Administration, for particular medical purposes such as supporting the healing of stubborn bone fractures. Today PEMF also appears in home wellness devices. These are a different category. The body is an electrical system
Every living cell carries an electrical charge. The membrane around a cell separates positively and negatively charged particles, called ions, and this separation creates a small voltage known as the membrane potential. Nerve cells use rapid changes in this voltage to carry signals. Muscle cells use it to contract. Almost every cell uses it to draw in nutrients, expel waste and respond to messages from its neighbours. Tiny gates in the membrane, called ion channels, open and close in response to electrical and chemical cues, letting calcium, sodium and potassium move in and out.
We can measure the electrical side of life every day. An electrocardiogram records the rhythm of the heart. An electroencephalogram records the activity of the brain. These everyday tests remind us that the body is not only chemistry. It is also an organised pattern of electrical and magnetic activity.
Life on Earth also evolved inside a natural magnetic environment. The planet has its own magnetic field, and the atmosphere produces natural low-frequency pulses. How PEMF works
